Do you know this website: http://machines.hyperreal.org/samples.html Here you can find a lot of free samples. Just be shure that the samples are in mono before putting it on the SD card. And mind the overall size limit for all samples (~490kb).

For checking shorts you can use every open circuit with some thing to show if a current is flowing. Just try to keep the voltage as low as possible. Maybe a LED or something else. I hope this helps!

Mmmh, the cards are formated with FAT32, right? Could you do a firmware update using one of these cards? Sometimes reloading the firmware helps and we could see if the LXR can read from the card.

Is the sequencer running, while you try to save? I also ended up with same empty patterns while the sequencer was running. But is was not reproducable. When the sequencer is stopped everythink works great for me!
