whats the resource for those ssl compressor thingies ? i found some stuff googeling, but a lot of forums seem to be linking to sites that are down. is there a shop for pcbs / group buy somewhere? i was looking for a compressor for some time now...

3M = 3mm just get "M3" and you are fine with thread pitch etc. I think the Mx stuff is available all over the world. at reichelt you get 200 for 1,85€

maybe a problem with the 595 registers. the problem is only with some leds, right? you could switch two of the 595 ics (a working one and one that drives the leds with the problem) and check if that moves the problem to other leds. check the last p…

Sounds nice. My modular (and related knowledge) is still very small, but i think thats all one would need. This is basically gonna be some 74hc156 and 595 that connect to the expansion header on the serial bus, right?
