Latest Firmware Version - Discussions

This discussion was created from comments split from: Latest Firmware Version.

I decided to split all the discussions from the firmware version thread since it got really cluttered with a mix of my announcements and all the comments.
The Latest Firmware Version thread is locked now and will only be used for changelogs and update announcements. You can continue to discuss in this thread.

  • I like the new structure of the load/save menus.  The new shuffle is dope too! :D
  • sounds like there is a trigger io extension one could breadboard :)

    any schematics?
  • are you keen on beta testing?
do you have any s-trigger devices?
I have a bunch of trigger IO PCBs here.
So far I tested the V-Trigger IO and it is working fine.
    I can't test s-trigger

the mechanical layout for these proto boards is not 100% convincing. gets quite crowded below the mainboard and since the 3.5mm sockets are too short to screw on nuts when using a 3mm enclosure, I have to make the board a little bit longer to use an additional standoff as support for the final batch.

  • I would love to beta test, but have no s-trig devices. I don't have any enclosure so far so there is no space problem.
  • I have a lot of s-trig devices and would love to beta test.
  • Hi!

    Happy new LXR owner here:-D

    Salute from Stuttgart, Germany

I have been searching something about program change for (at least) the drumkits...

Is this already implemented? (should I read the manual again?)

  • no, not yet implemented.
I should give the whole MIDI implementation some more love!
  • yeah, make love to midi! I love midi.

btw: local control on/off would be fantastic at well!

then I can use the LXR as percussion synth and controller but record everything on my main sequencer (cirklon)

and play pattern from both sequencers at the same time without having midi loops

  • Julian, what do you plan to add in next FW version???
  • what do you think is the most urgent?
I think highest priority are the bugs from the buglist, then the nice to haves/new features.
  • i think
    1. bugs
    2. missing features/finetune
    3. nice to have
makes most sense. (only my opinion of course)

in 2. and 3. there are some things that require thinking about the "whole philosophy" of the lxr before beeing implemented i imagine.
like the "bipolar vs unipolar" modulation scheme and everything about the sequencer.

maybe for some things from 2. and 3. it is less work if you do them at once though. (like everything midi, which is done all in the same class i imagine)

  • The question is what bugs are most annoying?

@loderbast no classes here - all plain C ;-) but yeah, it's all handled at the same place.
  • i see.

nice. i always liked plain c more than all this object oriented mumbo jumbo =P~

to me, the most anoying bug is:

49 - double triggering while recording quantized notes
  • hi there

I'm on version 0.23, I think - I have updated it a couple of times to be sure from the 0.23 FIRMWARE.BIN file at the top of the thread here ... but I am getting one really frustrating bug/crashing problem.

I am quite prepared to believe it is not the firmware but something else - open to suggestions - but I have done a pretty standard build, no changes except LEDs & related resistors, got a yellow OLED screen that someone here recommended too, all was working pretty well for the last 3 months or so.  Truth be told my heatsink is slightly less chunky as ordered the wrong, part, comparable component though so not a satisfying explanation really... in any case, no problems for first two or three months...

Now, after the last firmware update - and I think the previous one - but never before - whenever I build up to a decent number of parts - fairly predictably - just as things are getting interesting... essentially the LXR crashes.

Normally either everything freezes, or the Sonic potions LXR "titlescreen" flashes up, or sometimes the display shows jumbled non-characters... and all the parts disappear irretrievably, leaving all patterns blank.

Alternatively what sometimes happens is the patterns remain, but the sound set reverts to the initial sound set and all tweaks that I have done are lost.  Overheating?  Dust in the works?  SD card problem? (FAT32 correctly formatted, no previous problems, no hotplugging etc, in fact have never done that)  - firmware bug due to too much going on?  We are talking about every voice in action and extensively tweaked, but on the other hand typically happens after half an hour or so of playing.

Any ideas?  It is quite frustrating as often just before I think I will save or sample my loop!

Thanks & don't worry, still having fun...

    John
  • Julian, eliminating bugs are ofcourse primary thread, but new nice features are "next candy" for our LXR :)
  • @bendyjohn could you check the soldering around the xtal and the 22pF caps?
  • @implant yeah - some new stuff in between the Bugfixes is nice! I think next on the new features list is to finish the pitched midi out mode.
  • That sounds nice. Is there any official bug / feat. req. list?
  • @julian thanks very much for the tip.  Not sure what the xtal is, caps look fine.
In any case big thanks to @dlyline for suggesting a power problem.  Looks like I had accidentally switched to a 5v power supply (table full of diy!!!) instead of the recommended 9v. Also recommended 1A instead of 500mA in case anyone is having similar problems.  Well done for remote troubleshooting skills & thanks again -
    best wishes
    jk
  • I had similar problems, the synthesizer was blocked to the time to work with him. There was using a power of 7,5v 500 ma. Change one of 9v 1a and the problems were solved!

That sounds nice. Is there any official bug / feat. req. list?
yes. you can find it here
  • cool...i had the problem too with the power, but it was not really "reproducable". so 9V should work better.

  • normally 7.5V should be enough for the 7805 to produce stable 5V.
Another thing I noticed is that it seems some of the DC jacks together with some PSU plugs are a little bit flaky.
I once had a machine rebooting quite often, but there it was clearly due to movements of the psu cable and was resolved by using another psu. For safety I got the DC jacks for the next batch from another source.
  • for me, most annoying, respectively the only bug is external midi sync in
  • the midi nrpn stuff is not tested very well yet.
but since there are a lot of critical fixes (sync/lfo...) I release it now and make a thorough midi test tomorrow...
  • I am a bit confused. When i download the file directly with a right-click it is about 25 kb. If i click on it and then select "view raw" it is downloaded with a size of 247 kb. Which one is the right size ? I do not like to brick my beloved LXR !
  • 247kb

    ;-)

Thanks, man...will try this tomorrow, as i still got to learn for a recertification test.

Anyway i couldn't resist and performed the update - all fine so far !

  • I don't think you can brick the LXR. There is a bootloader that doesn't change, always boots first and will not write over, or corrupt itself. Worst case is to just reflash with a new image.
