LXR Compilation

edited May 2014 in General
Since I hear more and more cool tracks here in the forum, I thought about a LXR compilation.
The idea is to show other people what can be done using just the LXR as a single instrument. It should proof that the LXR is definitely more than just a drum machine.
Maybe Julian can sell the compilation in his shop or use it for promotion.
What do you think?

  • Great Idea!
  • This is a great idea. Another idea I had was to agree on a BPM and have as many people as we can contribute say 8 or 16 measures at that BPM, then someone mixes them all into a seamless track. Might be good to showcase on this site.
  • I'm down with that!

Ok, this would be my suggestion:

Title: LXR Compilation - All In the Box
    Tempo: 140 bpm
    Style: Open Style

Rules: All tracks should be made by using the LXR alone. Additional FX is allowed.

    Deadline: Fr, 11.04.14, 18:00 CET

I can do the mix if you like.
    Is this o.k.?

p.s.: It would be great if someone with graphically skills could think about a cover.

  • Sounds good to me. Should we specify a track length? Multiple submissions ok? I assume you mean May 11 (and not Nov 4) right?

He means 11th april, european date format...
  • Us Americans get easily confused with our reversed dates, pounds, inches, miles, etc. :-)

I don't think that we should restrict the length in general. But maybe no 30min drones. :D
Multiple submissions are fine as long as we have enough space (for fitting on a CD).
Julian, are you interested in a physical Demo-CD for the shop?

Thanks, nightworxx! Yeah, I meant 11th april. I hope this is fine for you. I plan to mix during Easter.
Just send me a pm with a link to your track (the mix should be a surprise).
I'm really looking forward to it!

    Hi

I'd like to participate in the compilation. So its 8-16 measures at 140 BPM? I have to say that 140BPM is quite fast these days :)

BTW: I won the LXR at sequencers.de's Acid Battle VI and I'm really surprised about this little box. Turns out it is perfect for Techno. Thanks again, Julian, for contributing this great prize.
  • welcome to the LXR crew + congrats for winning the acid batle, Max!
  • Excellent idea. So is it on? 140 BPM and 8-16 measures?
  • Thanks for the push @Möbius. Now we ready to start this one! Congrats to MaxDFB.

Mmmh, I would prefer complete songs without having a restriction of length. This way we can show how great you can tweak the LXR and do complete build-ups without using other gear.

The idea to use 140 bpm is to have a seamless mix in the end. If this is too fast you can also use 70 bpm or 280 bpm. :D

My idea was to show others what you can do with an LXR. So, this Compilation is not restricted to a special style. It would be great to have a lot of different styles on this compilation.

OK, lets start and welcome on board!
  • Are we going to establish that the songs should be done without overdubs or splicing? In other words do we want to show what's possible in a "live" session, or what's possible in a production session using only an LXR?

  • Yeah you are right. This would be cool!
Is it ok to focus on "live" sessions?
I would not mind if there is only little editing after recording.
  • Yeah I would expect that we should be able to remove boring sections (where we are drinking our beer instead of twiddling knobs), and also any screw ups, but not go in and chop up and rearrange stuff on the computer. The listener should have the concept of what is possible to do on the LXR as it's own instrument.
Also, I know you specify any length, but I think to maintain listener interest, we should encourage people to keep it below, say, 5 minutes. That way we can get a good variety without shorter tracks being lost among long running tracks. What do you think?

To which extent are external effects allowed ? 70/140 BPM really makes me wanna try to create some Digital Dub but I'd need some reverb/delay to keep it interesting...
  • Yeah, I can't get by without reverb and delay these days. Also have been experimenting last few days with running the LXR through a Proco Rat which sounds great on kick/snare.

yeah, that's the intention of this compilation!

I totally agree! I just don't want to be too restrictive. :)

Feel free! I would say any external effects are allowed. Yesterday I used two different outputs of the LXR to be able to use different effects simultaneously. :)
This was real fun! And that is how it should be!
  • OK, my first track is recorded. Total length is 5:03. :D
In the mean time I though about a cover for the compilation and this is my first try.
I am not quite sure about the title.
  • Cool. I like it. How do you want the tracks submitted?
Maybe we should make a new post with all the details so we get more publicity and everything is spelled out.

This is a great idea! I'd better start making some tracks....

    How can we submit those?

Please send me a notification with a link to a wav file.
I can't wait to hear your tracks!!!

p.s.: I updated the first post to collect all information together. Thanks for the hint, rudeog.
  • Ummm .. Live? Guess I missed that. Not sure if I can come up with something made that way.
  • @MaxDFB It's not as hard as you think. Just come up with a good sound set and a good pattern, copy the pattern to a new pattern slot and alter it a bit for variety. Then play around with muting and unmuting different sounds and switching between the patterns. It's art, there are no rules.
  • @Mobius Also, I think you mean 280bpm (instead of 240bpm)?

Yeah, thank you. I corrected it above.

It would be great to get a contribution from you!
It's a nice way to explore your LXR.
I know you can do it! :-bd
  • Haha, that's quite encouraging. I'm in!  :)

I'm already exploring the sequencer. Until now I used the LXR like a MIDI expander but as long LFO sync via MIDI isn't working I have to use its own sequencer anyway.

I'm really looking forward to the mix.

I looove the proco rat 8build myself a clone)
I'd say some external FX should be ok.
in the end you won't limit yourself to dry use in a real usecase.
