i did some more testing according to the LXR Troubleshooting webpage:
The 74HC165 ICs are responsible for reading the buttons.
If some or all of the buttons are not working, it is most likely due to an error with those ICs.

Yes, it's set to voice mode, after booting up that has been the default setting: voice mode / voice 1.

after over an hour of UPDATING...(1/2) i've pulled the plug,
