Weird LFO Problem

Hi, sometimes the modulations on the LXR are confusing me. For example, i have a LP Filter fully closed on one track, then i set up the LFO on this track to open the Filter, full mod amount, but nothing audiable happens, also not if i play around with offset settings and so on. The target and the track to be modulated are set to correct values.

it also happens with other parameters on the machine, is there something i´m doing wrong? i found it to happen quite erratically, any help welcome :)

thanks!

edit: also if i get the lfo to work, offest seems to not do any actual offset, it´s not possible to open the filter from closed to fully openend with an LFO, please help :)

  • From the manual:

    Attention!

The modulation scheme differs from most other synths in the way it
modulates the target. The destination value is multiplied with the LFO
value. That means the destination value is always modulated between its
current value and zero. It will never be bigger than the original
parameter value, so modulating a parameter that is set to zero won't have any effect!

Also, offset refers to a phase offset of the LFO on reset, not an amplitude offset. From my (very very limited) experience so far with the LFO, it doesn't seem like you'll be able to use it to do what you want :(( I would really appreciate it if someone could prove me wrong though!
  • Hi, thanks for the reply, i must have missed this information in the manual. i tried it and i get better a long with it now, at least something happens if i adress a parameter with a LFO :)

    cheers!

Do what now? Sweep the filter from fully close to fully open? Of course you can do this, just set the filter frequency to 127, LFO depth to 127, and adjust the offset so that the waveform starts in the right place (offset will change through 360 degrees of phase so this may take some playing - not sure offhand where the sine waveform starts). Then adjust the lfo speed to get the sweep rate right.

I rather like the way modulation is implemented. It might not be the most intuitive off the bat, but you also never need to worry about saturating a parameter.

Ah if this is indeed true then the LFO is much more useful than I thought. Since the manual regarding the LFO offset says:
    off
    Phase offset
When the LFO is retriggered, it is reset to the selected phase offset.
I took this to mean that you can only affect the phase of the LFO if you retrigger it using the "retrig" parameter, so assumed the initial phase of the LFO couldn't be changed.
