Alternative LXR button installation

edited October 2015 in General
One of the few things I didn't like about the LXR build was the button installation. A little ball of blu tack was required to hold the cap on each of the e-switches. Sometimes the caps became misaligned with the switches. The tactile feel of the buttons would vary at times -- some buttons were responsive while others were "squishy".

I've come up with an alternative method which doesn't require the use of blu tack. It requires replacing the existing e-switches with a similar model that has a long stem (Mouser 612-TL1100F).  This e-switch has the exact same footprint and operating characteristics as the currently specified switch. It just has a longer stem. This solution uses the existing switch caps.

The replacement switch stem does not fit the existing caps without a bit of modification. Fortunately, the modification is pretty easy to do with something like a dremel and grinding wheel. Basically, you need to grind the shaft down a little bit until it is roughly square (see attached pic). Then, you can simply push the cap onto the switch stem. The fit is fairly snug. If you grind too much material off the stem, the cap will fit loosely. So just take off a little material at a time and keep testing the fit. It's not real complicated.

The benefit of this solution is that the caps are more solidly attached to the switches and the switch response is a little more consistent. If you have been using the lxr for a long time, your switch response may be okay because the blu tack has bedded properly. It might not be worth the effort to replace all the switches if you are happy with the responsiveness. For a new build, I really think this method is worth considering -- as long as you have access to the right tools.
