LXR Newbie questions

edited August 2015 in General
hi

i had a quick look but didn't find what i was looking for , so apologies if these have been asked elsewhere
ive had my lxr for a day , and its more instant than the rytm , seems easier to dig around , assign lfo's to random parameters . it works really nicely and seems good to get such good feedback / updates from julian and the other guy doing custom firmware (sorry , i'll dig out your name ) and everyone else on the forum.

1 . can i swap between normal / custom firmware with no issues in terms of patterns/sounds , or do i need to commit to one of them as additional parameters are in the custom firmware ?

2. if i add my own samples , do they "appear" when i turn machine on , or do i need to reflash the firmware ?

  • Howdy stranger,

    1. I never had problems, but you should backup you SD card before.

    2. From the wiki:
    • you need a folder on the sd card named "samples"
    • put some 16-bit mono wavefiles in there (not more than 490kB!)
    • on the load screen there is a new option "load samples"
    • confirm with 'ok', make sure the seq is not running or the upload will fail
    • sample upload starts... this may take up to 30 sec. (not optimised yet)
    • when you see the "load sample - ok" screen again the upload is finished
    • the oscillators have some extra waveforms now "S1 to "Sn" where n is the number of samples uploaded

What's the total maximum duration of 490kb (e.g. how many seconds of mono samples @ 16 bit)?
  • Depends on the sample rate (not sure what the LXR supports). Assuming a sample rate of 44,1 kHz @ 16 bit mono:

    44100 * 16 = 705600 bits/sec = 86kBytes/sec

So at 44,1kHz you only have about 5,69sec., but drum samples are usually very short.
  • Can I choose a lower sample rate? For example, I would like to use 31.25Khz to squeeze out some more sample time. Th Korg Volca Sample uses that rate (mono) and sounds great.
  • Apparently, the supported specs are 44.1Khz mono. I wonder if an alternate firmware would allow a lower sample rate.
  • However, you can pitch them up an octave and double your sample time!

Mr-chielos... do you mean pitch them up an octave before saving, load them in the lxr and then pitch them down again?

    That's quite genius!  :-c
  • Jups, it's an old-school trick. When memory was extremely Small
  • another question.

can i assign the lfo to kit morph ?
  • hi :) just to chip in, if you're using my custom firmware, it should be fairly strightforward to switch between that and the 'stock' firmware. kits, patterns, etc, should largely be cross-compatible, ie you can certainly load files made in stock in my fw, and re-saving in my fw should not prevent files from loading back in stock, the extra parameters should just be 'ignored' - although if you re-save in the stock fw, those params will get overwritten.

Of course, make sure to back up the files on your hd periodically! I never have enough time to test all possibilities 100% in my fw :)

about morph... short answer is no. patch morph works differently than the lfo's for parameters. there is however a midi assign for morph in my fw, so if you have something that can generate a midi lfo...
