my kit came with 10x 74HC595 instead of 5x 74HC595 + 5x 74HC165

Q: assembly instructions needs update here or kit came wrong?

It would be strange that Julian change the kit, without changing the BOM or the assembly instructions. I would wait an answer from him, to be sure...

should be 5 of each as they do different jobs - 595 drives the LED's and the 165 reads the buttons - so your kit came wrong
