LXR OWL: a new unofficial firmware :-)

edited January 2015 in General

Hello,

I push this morning my current LXR development adding nice (for me) feature to the LXR Code.

This version is a fork from JULIAN V0.33 code:
  1. You can select among 72 pre filled patterns for each voice
  2. You can randomize steps/patterns for each voice, creating surprising drum lines !
  3. You can make a LOOPER effect like on the Arturia Spark machine
  4. You can randomize the sound of DRUMVOICE 1, 2 and 3 , (NEW) -> SNARE + Hit Hat + Cymbal
  5. Compressor, SRR , BRR, Waveshaper and OTO Biscuit FX alike.

How to download this new unofficial firmware?
  • Here is the FIRMWARE called OWL: HERE
  • Here is the CODE
Please send me your feedbacks and wishes !
I will correct things as much as I can, if you have ideas, just send me your suggestions :-)

Enjoy!

----
Instructions
Pre filled patterns for each voice
, and,
Randomize steps/patterns for each voice,

Select a track (1-7), then click on the button VOICE, then click on the OSC menu to access the extra features :-)
Tips: press SHIFT to refresh the track leds.

LOOP/DIVIDE effect
Select the PERF button, then click on the STEP SEQUENCER -> steps 9 to 16
- 9 is to clear the looping effet
- 10, 11, 12, ... 16 are special looping effects -> try it and enjoy!
- To reset, just press 9 :-)

Tips: Select a looping effect and meanwhile play with the ROLL function... Uplift effect garanted !!!

RANDOM Sounds effect
Select the VOICE button, then click again the OSC button to access the sub
menu:  You will see a menu called RND turn the knob from OFF to ON to listen to the new sound!

You can randomzie sounds for Drum 1, 2, 3. You also do the same for SNARE
(go under the FM menu), you can also randomzie the Cymbal and HitHat
sound (go under VOICE followed by OSC)

Tips:

If you let the RND values to ON (for VOICE 1, 2 and 3, SNARE ...) and then
move up the 'MRP' value in the PERF menu, you will get a nice effect:
The OWL will randomize the whole sounds each time you turn the knob!

The same happens if you let the RPF value to ON (RPF means Random Pattern
Filled). Everytime your turn the knob 'MRP', the OWL will create a
new drum line sequence!!! wonderfull in live situation :-)

Section FXs ...
Select the PERF button, then click again the PERF button to access the sub
menu:
You will see a menu called FX and, VL1, VL2, and WET.
Turn the FX knob between 1 and 8 (above not FX yet!) to select the FX you want to play with:
  • 1: Simple compressor (VL1 = sensitivity, VL2 = Compression level)
  • 2: OTO biscuit - (VL1 = Forward/Backward, VL2 = Bit Rotate level)
  • 3: Strange Low Pass Filter (VL1 = Lambda, VL2 = Filter Gain)
  • 4: Decimator (VL1 = ReduceBits, VL2 = Rate)
  • 5: Bit Reversed (VL1 = BitRotate, VL2 = nothing)
  • 6: Small Bit Reversed (VL1 = VL2 = nothing, level)
  • 7: Tabaria Wave Shaper
  • 8: Disto Wave Shaper
  • 9-16: not working yet.

Tips: if you mute the Kick Drum (VOICE 1) you will get better musical results :-) very groovy. You will have to add a Kick from another machine ;-)

Enjoy!!

Comments

  • hello,

thanks a lot for those new things!!

just load it in my lxr,

come back later with some feedback.
  • This sounds really cool. I wish this kind of functionality was added to the main repo instead of a fork.
  • Thats really cool thanks!
I was hoping that i could apply an FX per voice and not all the voices, exept that i love it!

  • Thanks a lot for the nice words!

@jbdiver - My code is stil experimental and not very well C written. I am improving the code day after day but I think that for the moment, and, if not requested by the community at large, it's not usefull to merge part of my code to the official branch. Next, I am following Julian Code, so I think that's not a big deal if there are differrent branches, no ? anyhow, it's nice to hear that you would like to see my code in the official branch :-) thanks!

@erwanone the FX are applied on each voice, but parameters are changed for the whole! So we are very near from what you are describing. I am thinking of adding for each track a special menu with the FX dedicated per track.. but then I need more "parameter" field in the C code... and we are limited to 256 parameters -> I could remove the EUCLIDEAN menu to free "parameters" fields... it's a choice ! what do you think ? do you me to try to remove the EUCLIDEAN menu (I don't use it!)... ?

    Regards.

  • just tried it last day,it's give nice live playing functions!!!

    keep going!!

  • seems that the rpf and rnd always function also when they are turned off,

and you uses the mrp knob, the same for you??
  • I will check, but I think that I and someone else noticed the same "issue" as you. We found it nice giveing improvisation option .. but witjh the experience and the time, I think I should correct this behaviour...
I will publish a new LXR - OWL version soon :-) I will integrate the fix...
    regards.
  • don't worry, that true it's give good result specially with the random sound effect :)

but better to have control on it,

for the effect it's work well like it!! but need time to know it better

and loop divide effect is awesome!!

  • Nice work! CHecked the drama! Lots of fun, but the params are jumping, I mean sometimes I can't use the encoder, it always jumps back...Keep it!
  • edited January 2015
and the randomizer for drumlines and -sounds together with mrp is incredible!
  • Wow, I must try this when I get a free moment!
  • Excellent job ! Very inspiring :)
  • How does this compare to the marimba/fusion firmware ? I'm confused !
  • Dear acidhouseforall,

Consider OWL as an evolution of Marimba and fusion. Fusion was my first release, then I updated the fusion with new functions.. I called it Marimba. Now I rewrote many part of marimba code and rearranged the FX sections to keep only the best effects and add more parameters to twick in live. I gave an overview of OWL and marimba differences in the following thread: http://forum.sonic-potions.com/discussion/638/marimba-owl-standard#Item_2

tell me if you need more details, I will answer :-)
  • I tried to use OWL but it seems that I can't choose any new effect and the random sound generator. I only can use the pattern generator and the loop/divide
  • Hello Jhsynth,
can you be more explicit ?

Click twice on "PERF", you should get the FXs ....
    no?
  • It seems it work now. I firstly try only with the firmware without any sound on the SD card
  • I like the effects, but it would be better if they wouldn't change the heard loudness that drastic, is it possible to adjust this phenomenon alilbit?
  • Yeap, it's true that the FXs are quite drastic. Try to mute the Track 1 (the BD) and play with the FX, tell me if it still "noizy" or not.

I am asking you this as I noticed that if I mute the BD (track1) and play with my FXs, then you get nice noizy sounds....

    :-)
  • I tested it today, youre right, it's much better without the first bassdrum...
Another thing is, that the voice page doesn't jump to the next one, when you press the voice button twice. just to mention it...
  • Does the display say that you are in OWL when starting up? I load the bin into the SD card but everything seems just like the normal firmware...
  • Yes, it says OWL Egnouf version ...
  • Do I have to format the SD card or is it enough to just overwrite the bin file?

  • Yes you owerwrite it....It's just called FIRMWARE:BIN, you only have to put the owl firmware bin (I think it always has to be called firmware.bin ) on the root folder and update it whilst powering on and pressing down the Encoder. Than you have to restart after updating and the OWL egnouf appears on the oled screen. That's it!
  • make sure there's only one .bin on the root folder
