[SOLVED] Strange behavior when loading user samples

edited October 2014 in Troubleshooting
I can't seem to get my LXR to correctly load samples. I've ensured all samples are 16-bit, mono, 44.1k wave files in a folder called samples, totaling no more than 490kb. The first issue is I often have to press 'ok' twice from the load samples menu, the first press will cause a brief screen flash but nothing happens, then a second press will initiate the "Sample Upload Started..." message. If I have more than just a few samples it seems to hang at this message forever and I have to reboot. If I have only a very small amount of samples it will complete. Either way, when I get back to the OSC page, there are double the number of samples and half of them make no sound. Even if I load just one sample, I will end up with s0 and s1, with s0 being the sample and s1 making no sound. I'm sure the files are 1 channel, so I'm not sure exactly what's going on. Any ideas?

  • I had that exact same behaviour with my LXR....
The double amount of sampleslots that get loaded of which half of them have no sound is strange.

Is there a way to specify the order in which the samples are loaded ? I tried numbering the samples but that didn't work. Not that it really matters, just wondering.

Love the LXR, by the way :)

  • Are you by any chance using a Mac to load the samples onto the card? Could be related to the Finder putting invisible files on the card (named like .filename.wav).
I always use a tool (Tinkertool) to clean the cards before feeding them to the synths (LXR, Ambika, PreenFM)
  • ??? i use the card slot of my Macbook Pro with Finder without any issues...
  • Mesmerised  I put the SD card in a Win7 PC, let it show hidden files and folders and the files created by Mac finder showed up. Deleted those files, reloaded samples in the LXR and guess what ? Yep, normal behaviour :)
    Thanks for sharing this information.

@Mesmerised thank you! Even though I have show all hidden files enabled on my mac and can see .DS_Store and others, the ._AppleDouble files do not show up. Popped the card into a Windows PC and saw them right away. I downloaded Tinkertool, but I'm not sure how you're using it to clean your SD card. However, I did find two other useful tools for combatting this issue (cc: @vibes71):

    the dot_clean command line tool:

    usage: dot_clean  [-fhmnpsv] [--keep=[mostrecent|dotbar|native]] [directory ...]

f : flat. Disables recursive conversion.
h : help. Print this message.
m : Always delete apple double files.
n : Delete apple double file if there is no matching native file.
p : Preserve apple double file
     s : Follow symbolic links.
     v : Verbose

and an app called BlueHarvest: http://www.zeroonetwenty.com/blueharvest/

  • I've been using the simple, effective and free Hidden Cleaner for a while now:

I leave it in the dock and drag and drop SD cards and other disks onto it to clean and eject. Works a treat.
  • Ah yes, I used Tinker Tool System, that one costs a little fee (but it's very recommendable) - it has a trial mode too.
    Glad you've got it working.
