LXR as MIDI sequencer for external synths

edited August 2014 in General
I'm looking at various solutions for sequencing my synths away from Ableton, and belatedly remembered (derp) about the the LXR and its good reputation as a sequencer...my question is how to set it up if running 6 external synths & inner clock sync-gen, without a thru port.

i have an old midisport 8x8, which won't allow me to use anything like the MIDI matrix on newer MOTU boxes, but can I use the MIDI ports & USB perhaps? Any help on how to get this set up correctly would be hugely appreciated! i'm stumped at the mo.

  • The big drawback of the LXR for sequencing melodic stuff is that it doesn't send note off signals. Good for drums and samples, not so good for synths.
  • Ah. Crap.

Ok, octatrack or seq v4 it is then... Thanks.

Yeah, the world is a little short on hardware sequencers at the minute. It seems like a bit of a waste to buy an octatrack just to use 6 of its tracks to sequence external gear, but that's your prerogative - it will probably still work out cheaper in hours than building a midibox and cheaper in cash than buying a cirklon. And hey, it does a hell of a lot more than sequencing too, you might just fall in love with its sampling and plock capabilities. For moving away from computers you could do a hell of a lot worse than an Octatrack.

Can the midisport run without a computer? If you're looking for computer-free midi routing, the Roland A880 is your bag, still really cheap on ebay, 8 i/o freely routable. Do you need a splitter too?

If someone could chime in regarding decent mid-range sequencers that would be great, I know there are some I'm forgetting!

    Cheers

Sorry, but I think this was fixed in one of the last firmware updates.
I have no problem sequencing melodic stuff using the LXR for external gear.

Seeing the changelog: - MIDI Note Off is send when amplitude envelope reaches zero (global settings gate mode parameter 'mod' has to be set to on)

Nice! Thanks for the tip :D
  • I think it's somewhat usable as a sequencer for very bare bones music styles (minimal tech, raster-noton type things etc). And to dig up a cliché: working within limitations might inspire you more than working in a DAW with limitless possibilities. It does for me.

This said, it would be cool to see an alternative OS that expands on the sequencing capabilities and turns it into some sort of Midibox seq type thing. Anyone? :)
  • I'd really like to see the whole firmware rewritten as a dedicated sampler and sequencer, although to be honest this already may be the case as baby has put my synths on the shelf! I would buy another one as a sampler seq, with all the abilities you would expect, time stretching, reversing etc
  • I think that I would use this to sequence external gear much more if there was just a note quantizer.  Honestly it would be handy for the drum sequences too, I find myself using the encoder to get precise melodies and fumbling around when turning a knob would be faster and more intuitive.
