LXR - Shiny.

edited May 2014 in General
I made this case last week.

The wood on the sides is reclaimed oak, from a timber place close to me, that does fancy furniture made from reclaimed timbers (i live in an area where 200 year old beams are common place).

I went for the square, machine drum, style look, rather than the sloped panel. I made a mock-up with a sloped panel first, but i did not think it looked as good. For such a small machine, im not sure that there is much ergonomic advantage, and i like that 'slab' look more!

The panels are gloss black anodised aluminium, with silver engraving. The key caps fit the switches perfectly, and don't fall off : )  The allen bolts are A2 stainless, and will stay shiny.
The logo is vectorised from this website. Maybe i should have added the LXR also, but i like the clean look and its contrast against the ancient oak.

Photos below (i still have not taken the plastic off the lxr's screen!) -

  • Great Job!  That looks stellar.
  • love those 606 style buttons!
  • Yeah the 606 buttons killed me. Really nice enclosure, good job !!!!
  • Now I want to design my own enclosure, maybe i should try before with a shruthi to make the beginner's mistake(sss) and then take it to another level with the LXR :)
  • Nice! Are those just large LEDs, or lenses?
  • There's three things on the panel that you may (or may not!) be looking at -

    a) the stainless steel allen cap bolts
    b) the leds that came with the kit (coloured)
    c) some mounting holes that dont have the stainless bolts in place when the photo was taken (ie small holes that line up with the pcb holes)

If i cut the panel again, i will not use all the mounting holes - indeed, i will leave out the unpopulated ones in the photo (step 5, step 12/13, and by the logo)

The leds supplied in my kit were coloured flat top units (3mm diameter) and they are flush with the surface of the panel.

Lol, maybe I needed new lenses then, they somehow seem larger... :)

  • Might be because i made the case as small as possible?

Ive never seen one of the acrylic ones in the flesh, but the clearance around the pcb on this case is as small as i felt comfortable with (about 4mm IIRC?)

In the photo of the corner, you can see a green LED next to one of the M3 fasteners.  I guess the allen head is about 5mm dia?
  • Where did you get those buttons?

I have a number left over from x0xb0x builds -

They are also the same unit as used on the midibox mbseq units.

Off the top of my head, i cant recall the part number, but, if you look on the adafruit website, it is listed there.
They are available from mouser or digikey (one of those, not both - again i cant recall which)

I may offer this design of case for midibox sequencer builds - if so, i could also offer it here?

The unit in the photos is just the one i made for myself, however, if i were to offer multiples, the wood would be made by a professional company (whilst i can make 1-off wooden units, im not set up for production work).

The cnc engraving would be done here.  I could supply the key caps / mounting hardware as part of the package (or not?).
