HELP : Build A linux Image for the rest of the community ?

edited April 2014 in General
Dear All,
I would love to start working on the LXR code, but I got stack on my MAC OS installation, I am also trying on Linux but THEN one the members of the LXR community (PLD) suggested to create a LINUX IMAGE for virtual box or VMWARE. I found is idea wonderful so:

** Linux Guy / Guys would you mind create an image for us (including eclipse, etc) ?

THANKS!!!!

of course, if you can't we will understand :-)

  • Nice idea. I'll have to give it a try later. :) Hope you're ok with Arch Linux and Openbox.
  • I am okay with ARCH linux (I was this morning downloading it!!) . Openbox, I don't know what is it.. I will look at it and install it :-)

  • I'm currently transitioning back to a unix based system, too. So probably in a few days I could give some additional tips ;)

I abandoned unix 2 years ago because I needed a windows based machine for my job and did not much more besides using ableton on the computer. But now that I'm back to making music with hardware and don't need visual studio for my job anymore I took the plunge back to unix.
  • I made a jump from windows to Ubuntu some years ago, but after a couple of dist upgrades I had to reinstall because of some changes in paths etc. No fun. Rolling releases ftw! :)

@egnouf @pld are you still taken with the idea of a pre-built virtual machine image?  I'm not sure there's so much value, as it'll go out date quite quickly.  Doubly so given how easy it is to get things rolling with the Makefile changes from @pld, and that you only need to download/extract a couple of toolkits to set things up.

@egnouf: if you haven't tried it so far, I'd recommend trying to set something up yourself via Virtualbox or the like.  It should be relatively straightforward, and I'm sure there's plenty of us here who can help with anything you get stuck on :)
  • I thought a VM might be quicker or less painful than everyone fiddling with their Eclipse install, but you're right, maintenance would probably be tricky, so I'd just go with makefiles for now.
But I suppose it might depend on what @julian has planned?

  • hello,

    i think you are right,
i will publish an how to soon for mac , we may do the same for linux :-)
i will use from now on the makefiles provided by @pld. i am not going to use Eclipse for compilation anymore.

my concern is more now how to "merge" codes from @julian, understand the code, get a nice simple IDE to browse code file and functions (like in Eclipse) and later building continue integration.

anyhow, big thx to tb323 who tried to help us building a VM.

    :-)

  • Sorry, haven't had much time with this yet. :) I have done a basic install this far, without X server. So graphics and desktop are yet to be installed.
I don't think maintenance would be a big problem with arch linux.. Just type "pacman -Syu" and the latest packages will be installed.
  • I'm currently not sure if I will pursue to use eclipse IDE on the linux build.
I used to work with kdevelop back in the days, but it annoyed me in the end and is KDE specific.

so maybe I'll switch to a completely makefile based project, which should also be easier to maintain for multiple platforms.

I never really liked eclipse as well, but for the time it was a good windows based solution.
