Tempo lag

edited January 2014 in General
I'm guessing this is a software thing more than anything, but the other day I was working on my performance setup and LXR was out of sync with Ableton.  The BPM was set to external etc etc, but it just wasn't matching up with clips.  I was using the USB from the LXR if that matters.

If I changed the BPM to the songs tempo and manually hit start, everything was fine though.

Anyone have any recommendations?  I know Ableton has individual track delay...should I mess around with that?

  • Was it running at the same tempo? How much lag between the beat in ableton and the beat on the lxr?
  • they were the same tempo....just enough off time to sound bad.  I imagine I need to use track delay to compensate, just not sure how much.  Thought there might be a trick :)
  • Interested to know if this only happens with USB midi.
  • I've just got my studio set up in the new house and playing around with Ableton after spending a lot of time in Usine. I'll give it a try with DIN MIDI when I get a chance!

It's the only thing I've ever used USB midi on...regular midi I think is fine.

EDIT:  DIN MIDI seems to be the same...I'm blaming Ableton, and just need to figure out track delay I think.
  • I just tried adjusting my MIDI clock sync delay by setting it to the estimated ASIO latency (10.9 ms) in my setup.

Sounds much better with the metronome now. I have no idea if using the ASIO latency makes sense, but it's sounding good on my end!
  • so did you compensate for the latency from ableton?
otherwise ableton will always lag behind the LXR.
That is if ableton does not compensate the latency on it's midi outs, which i doubt. (altough not sure here)
  • Just tried this (sync LXR to DAW) In reaper I get a 31 millisecond lag (lxr is 31 ms behind reaper) (using midi din). When I sync to my MPC (mpc is master lxr is slave), the LXR is 3 milliseconds behind MPC (not noticeable).

In reaper I can ADD delay to the midi clock (ie making the LXR even more delayed) but not subtract, so not sure what's going on there. Guess I need to figure out how to delay reaper or get it to behave better.
