Firmware suggestions

Just thought i should start a thread with this... Do what you like with it... it are just suggestions.

I'm just trying to work out this thing works... there is a lot of sonic possibility here. I'm not sure what all the parameter names in the screen are i'm using the editor screenshots you posted as a reference.

number1

second press on button brings you to next menu page. Now it's already that when you are on the second menu a button press brings you back on the firsth page. It would save the hand going tp the encoder.

number 2
I would love an extra noise source in the drum1, 2, 3 synthesis. Maybe it's already there and i haven't found it yet. Things like 909 toms require sine osc noise and filtering.

  • about parameter names -> click the encoder to see the full name of the highlighted (capital letter) parameter.

number 1 is a good idea!

    number 2:
you can change the mode on the FM page from 'FM' to 'mix'
now the main osc and the fm osc are mixed instead of modulated.
The amount ('amt') parameter on the FM page determines the mix ratio.
both OSCs offers white noise as a waveform.
  • Is there already or will there be intro/fill function ?
  • In the performance mode you can switch very easy to 8 patterns. But by fill you mean that the sequence automatically switches back to the main pattern?
  • ...if so just set up one of the 8 patterns to repeat n times and set the pattern to follow after that. (works a bit like clips in ableton)
  • I have 2 suggestions regarding naming.

    1. Let the name of pattern and sounds be the same on the SD-card when looking at them in a computer. Then you can easily rename them and reorganize them in the computer.

    2. When in Load/Save naming-mode let all other unused buttons be the alphabet so you could use all keys as a qwerty-keyboard.

There is of course a lot of important features which should have higher priority than these two but... :D

    Keep up the good work!

  • I like nr 2.
already thought about something similar. at least some hotkeys for " " and upper/lower case switching would be nice!
  • After having loads of fun and trying & failing to pick faults in this groovy little machine, one thing did occur to me... with a couple of my favourite instruments, if you switch the machine off, or knock the power cord out, then when you turn back on, the settings you were working on are exactly as they were before.  With the LXR unless you actively save them they are lost, inevitably just after you got a good groove going.
Presumably there's some constant saving going on in the background.  I suppose this is too difficult to achieve with the limitations on coding/memory space? (spot the non-programmer!....sorry!)
    jk

  • Yes! that would be great...I would also like a way to load patterns in less steps.  Perhaps there is a way to navigate the load/save page better.
  • from a performance point of view it should be no problem to implement some kind of auto-save feature since the frontpanel avr is responsible for this (at least for the sound data). I added it to the nice to have section of the bug/ToDo list

I'm open for improvements regarding the load/save page.
But you are right. so far everything besides sound preset loading is a bit of a hassle :(
  • Maybe there is a way to piggyback the sounds and patterns together so that when you load #1, it loads the pattern and the sound associated to it.  You can still browse preset sounds while playing, but I think I would want to do that less live than just changing pattern.

Maybe it's just a matter of making the default page the pattern page instead of the sound page?
  • edited May 2013
maybe I could remove the reset of the selected item when the load save page is entered.
So if the last thing you loaded/saved was a pattern, it won't reset to sound automatically if you leave and re-enter the load/save page?
  • I want separate loading/saving of drum sounds! :)

  • @drkorg me too :)

also would like to load a pattern to selected 'slot' in perf mode.. i thought it was happening that way but unless i'm missing something? a save song mode would then make sense.

@julian about the lfo, i notice you have to move pots really slowly on that menu or you miss a lot. there are gaps between params as well. some other mod dest's i want are bpm/global sr/shuffle/morph. are they cc'able too??
& good one on the update! [one blank screen i still have is voice 4 > FM]
nothing else. much like others, having LOTS of fun. no crashes or hangs & i've pushed it hard..
    =D>
  • @shiftr I was more referring to 808 intro/fill button.
  • you have 8 patterns that can be played with the press of a button.
For each pattern you can select how often it is repeated and which pattern to play after the current pattern is finished.

So for a fill function you could use one of those patterns and make it jump back to your main pattern after it is played one time. So far it can jump back to a fixed pattern number and to a random range of patterns (for example a random pattern between pattern 1 and 4)

Sorry, but I don't know how it works on the 808. I know fill functions from cheap casio keyboards *G*
  • the way you've done it is great julian.
808 has a/b, without number of repeats as far i remember :)
switch selects a or b, when you push the fill button then the opposite pattern plays once (? its been ages)
the random play is cool. i used to use that a lot in ableton.

something strange happened yesterday since the 0.17 firmware. while changing one voice, another would change its wave or go silent, happened more than once and you need to select a different wave then back again to get your voice to make sound again? anyone else seen this?
also noticed distortion/clipping on some busier patterns that were fine before? is this because the noise volume changed or some other issue with the voice summing?
  • Hey together, this is my first post here and I hope I am in the right topic.

The lxr is a Great machine, but there are still some Functions i Miss or maybe have Not found.

    1. I Hardy Miss The possibilty to tap in The bpm. This would be great to use the lxr with dj equipment that not sends midi. Some kind of tempo bend should be there as well.

    2. Is it possible to copy on single sound from one to an other soundest or maybe safe them separate?
So it would be possible to make for example a new sound set with the kick from sound set 1, the snare from sound set 8 and take the toms from an other sound set.

    3. Is there an way to safe the output routing as an default?

    4. I think the possibility to set a highest and a lowest possible value for the parameters would be great for playing live. For example the filter resonance of one special sound can only work between maybe 0 and 57. So you can tweak the parameter a lot but can not "destroy" the original sound. The potiontometers should take the new values as new min and max as well

    5. I don't know if any of you has used the traktor dj app before. One of the most interesting features is the freeze mode, where a loop can be chopped while it is playing. A similar option to work a pattern live would be really cool.

    6. If one of the 3 first instruments could be switched to an monophonic synth machine would be really good. ;-)

I know this are a lot of ideas which would cost a lot of time an work and time to realize them, but I think it would bring the lxr more then one step further...
  • tempo bending is allready possible. start a track and switch to the settings menue. there you can change the tempo live while track is running. thats the way "analogue mixing" works ;-)
  • Of course that would work and I have done this on my turntables as well, but tap tempo and tempo bend is an much faster and precise solution for me ;-)
  •  1. I Hardy Miss The possibilty to tap in The bpm. This would be great to use the lxr with dj equipment that not sends midi. Some kind of tempo bend should be there as well.
what would be a good button for this? I'm open for suggestions.

not yet. it's on the list for future updates.

    3. Is there an way to safe the output routing as an default?
no. my thinking for making it per kit was that different kits may need different routing.
maybe an option to disable loading of the outputs in the global settings menu would be good.
I'll add it to the feature wishlist

    4. I think the possibility to set a highest and a lowest possible value for the parameters would be great for playing live. For example the filter resonance of one special sound can only work between maybe 0 and 57. So you can tweak the parameter a lot but can not "destroy" the original sound. Not sure how to do this UI wise.

this would be something for the unused sequencer buttons in performance mode.
Once the mayoe bugfixes are through, I will think about some nice FX for the unused 8 buttons.

    6. If one of the 3 first instruments could be switched to an monophonic synth machine would be really good. ;-)
what are you missing to use it as a synth? you know that you can set note values for each step in the step options?

I know this are a lot of ideas which would cost a lot of time an work and time to realize them, but I think it would bring the lxr more then one step further...

  • Well, for the bpm tap and function I would prefer to open the normal bpm setting window ( parameter name written in full text) and then use the rec button for tap tempo, shift for negative bend and copy for positive bend.

For the adjustment of an max or min value of special parameters I would do this pretty equal. Choose the parameter you want to lock with the encoder. Press the encoder so you can see the full name of it. Choose highest value and lock/unlock it it with copy, choose the lowest value und lock/unlock it with shift.

I think this should not interrupt the normal workflow because, tapping a bpm and recording changes at the same time makes no sense for me...

The monophonic synth thing is more a wish for a (maybe) mk2 version. I love the possibility to change the note values per step and had a lot of fun with it already. The point is that the synth engine was build for making drums and not synth sounds in an classical way. The results you can get out of it are great, but I think there could be more possible.

What I really like is, that the lxr is am machine to dig deep
  • i am sorry to say, but in my oppinion this tempo bending thing is absolutely unnecessary. as you say, setting  tempo and offset is allready possible with current set of features. the way to handle the machine in a dj set is exactly the same procedure as handling a turntable or a normal cd player (excluding dj software). implementing redundant extra features at such an early development stage doesn't sound good to me.
therefore, my suggestion would be to increase the resolution of the mastertempo. this way you could bend the tempo by using the potentiometer (which should only affect the the numbers left to the dezimal point). the fine resolution you need in order to run the box insync for the length of a whole song should be set via encoder. maybe its possible to implement a logarithmic scale between encoder turning speed and the amount of tempo change.

on the other hand, i love your idea of modding the LXR into a more complex melodical VA Synth.
Could be worth creating a fork, eh? ;-)
  • @ Nasrudin:

    your idea sounds good. ;-)

idea for changing drumkit for single sounds (instruments):

when on load page, press shift plus instrument 1-6 to select instruments to change the drumkit for

like this, you could create new drumkits from your drumkitlist

when I'm on the pattern load menu page, I'd like to be able to select the first sixteen stored patterns with the step buttons.

when I'm on drumkit load menu page, I always would like still to be able to use the roll function with the first six step buttons, as well as mute the instruments, and change pattern bars with the eight buttons :-D

alternatively, if selecting/changing patterns with the eight buttons is not good, one could think about using these buttons for selecting the kind to save/load. lets say, first button is drumkit, second is pattern, third is morphkit.. or similar.. in order to perhaps just have to use the save button once. for saving. or select save or load and save.

...just some thoughts during jamming :-D

  • Since the LXR is a very performance oriented machine, I would suggest that the shuffle param is too close to the SR param in perf mode. I don't have very fat fingers but I've noticed that its a bit too easy to nudge your shuffle settings out if your being a little too enthusiastic with the SR knob.

    So either:

    a) implement a shuffle 'lock' - maybe press encoder and flag it as locked somehow in display - press again to unlock

    b) easier - reorder the params so: shu, Rol, mrp, sr - this way if you nudge something you get less of a realtime screw up - maybe you nudge sr/mrp - okay cos its a sound change not a timing change. If you nudge Rol its not real time anyway...

Not a biggie, but surely just enhances the performance ergonomics further.
  • added to the list. I think I will go for option b)
will be included in the next firmware release.
  • Hi - are you considering any other quantised pattern switching modes? I'd like to see maybe a 1/16 switch or even unquantised "immediate" switch. I'm sure you already thought about it so maybe there's a reason it's not there...
    Cheers!
  • switch to next step and continue from this step in next pattern is lots of variation fun.

    e.g. pattern 1 - press pattern 2 at step 6 - pattern 2 starts immediately at step 7

  • One little usability request.

On the parameter detail page (the one where you see full parameter name and it's value), it would be cool to let the encoder jump by value of 10 while holding the Shift button to scroll faster to required value.

It behaves like this on Yamaha RS7000.

    Thanks in advance!
