My quick and dirty first attempt at sequencing Jason Hotchkiss' MIDI Switcher (https://www.tindie.com/products/hotchk155/midi-switcher/) with the LXR... Fun little device, this midi switcher thing. Cheap kit, too: $40 + a couple of shitty $5 solenoids from ebay.
The 24v one seems to be better than the 12v ones, but they're all fine really. It's running off a 12v 4a power supply. A 12v 1a power supply doesn't give enough power - the solenoid hits were too weak.
They are supposed to be velocity sensitive as-is. The MIDI Switcher board is supposed to vary the duty cycle on the solenoids to achieve different velocities. It didn't seem to be doing that properly on my tests with the LXR though, but I didn't spend too much time testing or trying to get velocity sensitivity to work.
...they seemed to hit with the same force until I turned velocity down very close to 0 - then they didn't hit at all. Might just be the fault of the low quality solenoids, I guess.
EDIT: actually, it looks like velocity sensitivity has to be enabled using the configuration software - I didn't do that. So, I guess it would probably work once I enable it using the config software.

Now build more of those and wire up your whole flat ^^
If you're really lucky, you'll end up like this
How hard would it be to make those solenoids velocity sensitive?
