USB Midi Problem

Hello!
First of all i would thank you for this incredible drumsynth! It makes a lot of fun and the features and the soundengine are very good and special.
I love my LXR!
At the beginning i had some troubles with the firmware and the sd card, but after i sucessfully installed the 0.24 firmware nearly everthing is fine and works for me.
Here is my problem.
Sync with the midi ports is ok, but the sync with the USB port drives me crazy :-)) The tempo of the LXR Sequencer is much to fast. A 120 bpm sequence sounds like 200 bpm. This is unuseful for me.
I'm using ableton live suite 8.
My usb setting is: output usb midi sync - on, no other settings...
and i also can not sync ableton to my lxr by reverse setting (input sync on)

it would be very kind, if somebody can help me ;-))

cheers and groove on

  • I keep track sync and remote on for MIDI output.
  • @admviolin - thank you for your comment.
Unfortunately this setting (Track, Sync and Remote: ON - for Output) did not solve my problem.
The tempo of in Live 8 is set to 120bpm - and my LXR BPM is set to "0". When starting the LIVE 8 sequence - my LXR begins to play, but with nearly the double of the tempo -> strange...
The other way: When set the LXR bpm to "120" and the settings in Live preferences to Sync and Remote: ON - for Input - and set the sequence in LIVE to external (EXT) nothing happens when i press Play on my LXR.
When i connect the LXR with LIVE with the Midi In/Out - all works for me - but the USB Port seems to be corrupt - i can not configure this to an useful setting.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks for your HELP!

  • Not sure if it helps but see my other post I just posted titled "Midi sync issues..."
I have seen a "double tempo" issue in the past with other external gear, and it was the result of a midi feedback loop (I was getting the midi clock sent twice which doubled the tempo). So I guess you could check to make sure you are not ending up sending it twice (like if you had both the din and the usb connected, not sure what else to check)

  • Yes I've had that with too with MIDI clock. Make sure another unit that is being slaved is not also sending out clock back to you interface / gear.
  • Ok i only connect my LXR to my DAW Live 8.
Here is also a screenshot of my midi-settings.
The tempo in my LXR is still to fast.
The tempo varies from too fast (about 180bpm) to super fast (about 260bpm) with the same settings.
    CURIOUS...

    some other ideas??

  • Could you try another program (like reaper) to see if it only happens with live? Since you said it works fine with regular midi, I assume it has something to do with the LXR interface on your computer. When you tried it with regular midi ports were you slaving to Live as well, or slaving to other gear?
  • @rudeog: thx for your comment.
when i connect my LXR with midi i/o i use my firewire interface echo audio6 in LIVE. This works great.
Yes maybe the LXR interface on my computer cause this problem. Now i will try reaper...
  • Ok, mabye you can help me...
I loaded reaper and i can not get midi-clock sending to my LXR. I enabled the LXR USB midi Device in Reaper and selected the option "send clock..." nothing happed when i pressed Play in Reaper - Are there another settings i should do?

    THX!!!

  • In reaper under midi outputs you should see a list of devices. Next to LXR USB it should say Enabled+Clock. That should be all you need there are no other reaper settings that are needed. First get it to work with your firewire device controlling a separate outboard gear (like an electribe or whatever you might have). When you press play in reaper, you should see the position cursor start moving to the right. So first make sure it works with other stuff then bring LXR into the picture.
  • OK thank You!
Yes did all settings as described by you.
In Reaper - when my LXR is connected via Midi /I/O everything works fine -
When i press Play in Reaper my LXR starts the pattern -> cool.
If i connect the LXR with the USB Port and set the options to the Sonic Potion USB Port -> enabled and send Clock to this device - nothing happens.

So something is wrong with my USB Port - Reaper and LIVE recognize the USB Port.
In Reaper no sync is working and my LXR did not start the pattern.
In LIVE the sync is on but with much too fast tempo

  • Good to know... my other instruments (eg my bass-station2 or the ultranova or my virus ti) work great with USB.
Only the LXR USB Port has problems...

  • Interesting one. I'm not sure if you could blame this one on faulty connections, as I would think that if your pc is recognizing the usb device then it's able to communicate with it (but someone like Julian might know more info, or if thats a true statement).
How do you like the bass-station2? I'm thinking of getting one (but as usual I am trying to justify the purchase. Too much gear).

  • @rudeog - I love the Bass-Station 2. The sound is awesome and the handling is very simple but highly flexible. All faders and knobs sending midi data - very useful for automation and recording. I truly recommend this synth. AND it is very cheap - compared to the virus ti. There are many videos on youtube - especially from sonic state... - but i don't want to make any camouflaged advertising ;-))

    Have fun and groove on...

  • normally the USB connection should work once the device is recognized as audio/midi device.
In the end it is just like the hardware midi implementation, just another channel where the data comes in.
since I have the merge with rudeogs code finished, I'll try to sync the LXR to ableton via usb now...
  • Sync with live 7 works like a charm here over usb.
    same settings as you used.
    :-/
  • is only sync not working as expected or is the parameter control also affected?
Do you use a hub? (just guesstimating here)
  • Dear Julian,
    Thank you for your answer!

I do Not use a USB Hub. I work with ableton live8. The USB Port is recognized in the midi-Audio settings on my Mac. The USB connecting seems to be "ok". Live8 lists the LXR USB is the midi settings. Also Reaper shows the LXR USB. In live the Sync is not ok - it plays about the double of tempo. In Reaper nothing happened, when i set the click to the usb port. Playing a midiclip in live is also buggy. Sometimes it works, but not stable.
The LXR Midiport I/O work great. Strange...
All my other hardware gear (Virus TI, Basisstation, ...) work ok, without any problems.
It would be very nice to solve this problem.

Have a great day ans thank you!

  • One little thing...
It would be very cool, if the Tempo in the LXR could be saved within a pattern.
    Think about it ;-)))
  • Funny you should mention that. I was just thinking about doing this the other day, as it makes more sense to store it with the pattern.
  • any other mac/live users who can confirm this?
I only have access to linux and windows machines.

I just want to find out if the problem is limited to hexs unit or a general USB problem.

    regarding the tempo.
I think we had the discussion at another place.
best would be to save the tempo with the pattern, but don't change it if the sequencer is already playing.
otherwise you will get tempo changes if you load a new pattern set in the background.
  • Thank you!

Yes you are right. Tempo change is not usable.

    Concerning the USB problem:
I bought a midi to USB (ESI midi mate II) cable today. One side midiport plugged in my Mac and two cables with midi I/O in my LXR. This works! No Sync/Tempo problems... http://www.thomann.de/de/esi_midi_mate.html
Therefor i think it is not a problem with my Mac.
    What do you think?

    Thx!!!

  • I use live8, but on a PC.  My past issues were with the port and the cable not sitting well in it but I replaced it and it's fine.
  • USB midi works fine for me in Windows world (I also only have windows) and I've tried Live, Reaper, Fruity Loops. So to me this sounds like an issue with mac as it relates to this specific usb driver.
  • Ok - silly Mac ;-))
Should i validate the assembly of the USB Port?
    Hmmmm....
  • I think that would be strange. From what I've read the osx class compliant driver should be much better than the Microsoft version

  • hex, is it possible to try this out on a different physical mac machine, just in case that particular one has something else going on?
  • Yes of course. I have to try this at my friends Mac....
I will report the result soon.

Thank you all for your assistance!

    Hex.
  • I have the same problem with mac and Live8. There are no problems setting the USB connection up but as hex said the tempo is about twice as fast. I have not tried if a normal midi connection using the same settings keeps in sync yet. It would be great if there was some way to solve the problem so please ask if there is anything I can do to help! ;)
  • Hi Julian,
same sync problem (only over USB) here with live 8 / 9 / 9.1
Same behavior on my iPAD when I connect the LXR directly using the camera connection kit: when using "littlemidi" the LXR sequencer speed looks more than doubled...
  • Hi Julian, hi all together,
i tried the LXR on my freinds macbook pro with Abelton Live 8 and the sync tempo problem is the same.
The LXR sequencer speed is too fast.

    Best wishes,
