Nearly done, 1 problem left

edited October 2013 in Troubleshooting
Hey just built my LXR today but as the title says its not fully functional after a first test.

1. One button in the step sequencer does not seem to work. Does not click on & off. After a few pushes I got a blinking led which is an unexpected behavior but still no sounds on that step. Can't see any soldering problem...could it be a faulty component ?

2. Weirdly enough, in Voice mode I only got the display working on 3 voices. On the four others it remains black and I can't tweak anything, but there is sound coming out of the voices...

Comments

  • 1) you can measure the buttons with a multimeter. See if they 'beep' when you push them.
Normally they should click. Caps already on it?

2)can you try reinstalling the firmware?
  • 1) Measurement show the button acting normally...

    2) I tried another SD card and re-dowloadind the firmware but I have the same issue, actually I noticed that I have some "blank screens" in some of the voice edit pages too.
  • - a blinking button occurs when you hold a button pressed -> parameter lock
    - have a look at the schematic to which IC the button is connected and check soldering
    - check the pull up resistor (network) for the button

    - there is a blank menu voice 4, page 4 (fm)
    - you still have completely blank menus for voice 4 to 6? O_o
  • I noticed two of my buttons didn't "click". I readjusted the tape used to make the button cap more snug on the actual button nub. I reduced the tape in area and the buttons work better.

Not sure if this is your problem but I did see it as a problem with the buttons fitting to the case using tape to make the button caps snug.
  • @julian thanks, I will look at this !
About "blank voices" : Voices 1-3-4 are working normally. Voices 2-5-6-7 have no display (if I remember correctly) Weird right ?! :p

@udenjoe : I don't think that's my problem as I tried using the button without the cap again and again ;)
  • so the buttons is not 'clicking' but measurements show it is working?
even without a cap it does not feel right (no click) ?

Do the voice select buttons work to mute voices?
Just to figure out if it is a button problem or an AVR problem.

You probably don't have an AVR burner?
Then we could find out if it is a firmware/bootloader problem or related to the hardware.
When I test the AVRs I only tested voice 1 so far, so I would not see problems with the display of voice 2.

If the buttons are working in general, I could only offer to send you a replacement AVR and a replacement button to see if this solves you weird display problem. At the moment I don't see any problem that could cause only some menu pages to not show up, besides a corrupted AVR memory :(

Did you re-download the firmware from the website or used the same as before from your SD card?

I'm pretty confident that the problem with the button comes from a bad solder somewhere on the PCB as you indicated.

About the other problem, obviously I don't have an AVR burner (maybe someone else in France could help before you send a replacement...) but I re-downloaded the firmware as a separate file and did not use the one I had with the SD card image.

Another thing I know is that I'm not sure if I am actually using FAT32 although I don't see any connection with that kind of problem...

Button issue fixed after looking for bad solders !

Muting voices works... I'm gonna try reinstalling the firmware one more time.

EDIT : Formatting to FAT32 did not seem to solve the problem. Third try with yet another SD card -> Same problem. I noticed that I actually have some voices with access to the first 4 pages of the "voice "edit" pages only while for some of the voices where I noticed blank screens I have some access to the rest of the edit pages.
I'm no expert but I think you might be right about the corrupted AVR...
  • sounds about right.
    I'll send you another AVR.
With the SD card it should either work or give you a SD card error message.
I have no explanation for only partially working menues, as long as the buttons are working (which they are since you can mute voices) besides either a non working bootloader or a defective AVR memory.
  • Ok great ! I feel like having a handicapped newborn right now !
  • I tried to switch to the new AVR you sent me and YEEEEEAH it seems to work normally now !

(I just have one "blank" screen on the FM page of the snare voice.)

Thanks a lot for the support Julian !
