building issue

edited September 2013 in General
Hi there,
today my kit arrived and i started building it. now i am at step 20, but i am facing a problem here. when i start up only one green led remains on : "voice 1" , not "voice mode" as it should. pressing the start button doesnt start the chase. chips are all placed correctly, mainboard is attached properly.
what else can i check??

edit: ok, found it. i mixed two ic's :)

cheers,
Ello

  • are other buttons responding?
    can you change voices?

cold solderjoint below the avr? maybe reflow the suspicious pins?
from the UI everything besides setting steps and starting the chaselight should work even without the mainboard attached.

hi, here is another weird thing happening (see shots) . it is happening for voice 2 and 3. those cannot be modified.. the rest is working (i guess like it should) :)

and, btw: what a funky qr-code you have created.
  • O_o

I have to think about this. It makes no sense if all other voices are working. So the display works everywhere besides those 2 voices? Normally I'd say it's a connection problem between avr and the display, but then all display pages should be affected.

Unfortunately I have absolutely no time today. I'll get back to you tomorrow!
  • yes, and the best is, that those cryptics dont appear everytime. the mix issue however, does.
do i need to make a firmware update? i guessed thatit has the latest on it...
  • Should be the latest firmware. See the number during boot. I also tested all avr and Mainboards

i'll check the number when i am back home. could it be that i destroyed something with my first mistake ?
(picture shows which ic's where mixed)
  • Maybe some kind of bad solder joint on the lcd connector that causes problems only when there is mechanical pressure to the pcb on certein points - which would cause a problem when those voice buttons are pressed.
Its unlikely but i had a similar probilem once with another device.

Can't hurt to check the soldering of the lcd connector and maybe reheat some of its solder joints.
  • What are the two ics you had mixed up earlier?
  • a 595 and a 165
  • heyho! i put the firmware to 0.21 and now it works :)
    YEHAA, great fun!!!
  • thats great news :)

    have fun with the machine!
  • oh yes, i am already having ... its totally awesome :)
  • wonderfull! that's how I like it. Stay away from the computer for a day, eating too much cake, and the problems solve themselves. Maybe you could try flashing the latest firmware again. Maybe something went wrong when programming the AVR the first time, since my function test ist quite basic(synth powers up, makes sound, usb works). So maybe the firmware for menu page 2/3 got corrupted.

anyways-glad that it is finally working! :)

  • can you try sliding a piece of paper or something similar below the display?
It could be either the display touching something or a bad solder joint that looses contact when under mechanical stress.
