USB Device Over Current Status Detected

edited September 2013 in General
Really odd....I haven't used my LXR in a bit, and today, Ableton couldn't detect it.  Since I'd had problems before with this, I thought it was because of my USB hub.  When I plugged it into the back of my computer, it shut down!  When I restarted, I got USB Device Over Current Status Detected.

What does everyone think?  I tried a few different cables, all the same...they don't fit well in the USB plug on the back of the LXR.
Should I just replace the plug?

i think you should check for a short on the gnd and 5v pins of the usb plug.

  • did you put the isolation tape between the jack and the PCB?
  • Yes I did the tape thing.  I'll check for a short. Thanks for the pictures.
  • as mentioned above, sounds like a short.
The 5V from the usb midi jack are not really used in the LXR.
Over current means the USB port is drawing more than allowed, which in this case can only mean something is touching the 5V usb line.
  • So I replaced the usb jack today, and I can't get my computer to recognize it.  Windows says it malfunctioned .  I've put the isolation tape down.  The good news is it isn't shorting out my computer anymore.

What is the path I should be tracing to find the short?
  • first of all mesure for continuity to the mainboard connector and check that there is no short between the usb pins.
  • I couldn't find any continuity, so I just re-soldered the points you sent me...some of the soldering looked dodgy.  After struggling to get the soldering iron in there (wow LED 29 is close!)

    IT WORKS!

    As always, thanks Julian.
