  • congrats! the shruthi is a fun machine! :D
  • Hehe nice one!
I'm also so close to get one!
  • it will get worse, believe me

you better start ordering components like resistors in packs of 100.
it started with a shruthi for me and now i can't move in my room without tripping over some electonic devices, cables or boxes of components. (literally)
    =P~
  • I'm fighting hard to not order a Yellow Magic Shruthi
  • Go ahead and lose the fight.
The YM is really fun. Built in delay!

    :D
  • I got 3 of them yet, one of them a programmer and i knew some more will come - i need all those filter types...hehe !
  • I have *all* the filter types of Shruthi and I'm in the process of doing the same for my Ambikas. They're both useful and fun, what more is there to ask for? :D
  • The first was LXR... now Shruthi stands next to it and... next shruthi filterboard waiting for parts :)

DIY is like drug :D safe drug :) hehe
  • until you try to remove an IC with your fingers and one of its legs burries below your fingernail >-)
  • I caved last night.
  • I know it will get worse ... ;) And I'm looking forward to it!
  • I was talking with a co-worker today and I came to the conclusion that I keep buying smaller things to build as an attempt to avoid building a modular. ;)

Eurorack modules can be pretty small though ..?

Yellow Magic is on my wishlist, too. Or the Polivoks. Or both. Maybe a "Little Dieter" also? Just to totally get lost ... I guess starting a modular is like reaching a point of no return. I just recently saw the latest trailer of "I Dream Of Wires" and Mr. Doepfer said: "Who needs all this stuff?"
  • Dont get a Little Dieter.  A LXR or a Shruthi compared to any Modular Gear is like comparing an HubbaBubba Strawberry to Crystal Meth. Stay away from it!

    [/advertisment]
  • I'm glad to hear that you are so concerned about the (mental) health of possible future customers.
  • I did a mini set in my livingroom using lxr and yellow magic. It was a little magical. :)

    Been there....  8-}

Ah, and: Yes, Shrutis are addictive. I've got the 4pm (a beast), the yellow delay thingie (it IS fun!) and an Anushri.
  • It started with an x0xb0x (well several i suppose) then 2 x Sammich SID, then a 9090 (which is a Daddy of a project BTW), SSL mix bus clone (in progress), big MFOS build integrating Ultimate/Expander and 16 Step Seq......LXR.....

    once it starts...........

Oh and look forward to the solder blob on the leg - you know its coming
  • @BLOKE

LOL@ solder blob on the leg. Lucky for me, I got that out of the way when I was around 12 years old.
    Still have that scar...

    Then comes the project backlog...

    >-)

@Bloke I've also done the 9090, two SSLs, and an original MFOS.  The 9090 snare and clap never sounds quite right.  I wonder about the audio bus board....

I do love them all, mainly because I did build them. It is an addiction. This is my next project:  http://www.lzxindustries.net/bitvision.
  • whats the resource for those ssl compressor thingies ?
i found some stuff googeling, but a lot of forums seem to be linking to sites that are down.
is there a shop for pcbs / group buy somewhere?

i was looking for a compressor for some time now...

  • Gyraf Audio - cant remember but I think someone sells the PCBs in the UK at Audio Kitchen. THAT VCAs can be got directly from manufacturer.
  • thanks Bloke,

i am considering to build that.

looks like an easy build and not very expensive in parts, too.
  • Woah! @udenjoe  I think I need to get a bitvision after I'm done building this Shruthi.
  • @loderbast

As much as i like DIY but it doesnt get better than this - i doubt you can do better and cheaper with DIY
  • @fcd72 that is cheaper. I see the US price is also $175 where as making the SSL was about 400-500 usd.

http://www.groupdiy.com/ is where the GSSL info now resides. There are many more projects to be found there as well.
  • thanks fcd. i totally forgot about those. i think i'll ebay me one of them.

i listened to a few ssl demos and while it sounds really nice on a mix, i figure it is not as good for "compressor as sound design device" like bassducking and stuff like that.
i think i want a compressor that is not always subtle, so i am better of with somemthing like the rnc.

Those SSL and Chandler clones do not have other terms of usage as the originals. They are excellent bus compressors, but they are not really usable when it comes to sidechaining or coloring/sound design.
The RNC is a really fine little beast, unbeatable for this price - and to be honest guys - you won't get them  much cheaper on ebay as the price at the big T...
  • @fcd72
Cool, thanks for pointing the RNC out! Totally getting one of these.

As for DIY: As i noticed, it's rarely cheaper when it comes to clone stuff. The only advantages IMHO are, that it's fun (!!!), you get to the bottom of things aaand you may build things that are not on the market. The LXR might be one of these.

Compressor clones are built for two purposes:
    - the original compressors are rarely available, as the owners won't let them go
    - less noise/ better signal-to-noise ratios, as some of the originals are made in the late 80ies or even earlier, and the age made their components not better. And of course as the components available today are way better, but not cheaper.
